Six days in Sikkim can take you from bustling mountain streets to quiet monasteries, glacial lakes, forested valleys and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the Eastern Himalayas. For Prachi Pamoor and Darshak Sharma, the journey moved between Gangtok and North Sikkim, with each destination bringing a completely different atmosphere.
Their trip began at Bagdogra Airport before winding along the Teesta River towards Gangtok. From there, the route climbed towards Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir before heading deeper into North Sikkim. Lachung became their base for exploring Yumthang Valley, followed by a return to Gangtok and the journey back towards Bagdogra.
There were mountain viewpoints, roaring waterfalls, high-altitude valleys and quiet moments along the way. And with great weather accompanying much of the journey, Sikkim gave the duo plenty to take in.
Here’s what stood out the most.
Gangtok Set the Pace
The journey began with the drive from Bagdogra International Airport to Gangtok. The route followed the Teesta River, with the landscape gradually changing from the plains of West Bengal to the winding mountain roads of Sikkim.
Once they reached Gangtok, Prachi and Darshak checked into their hotel and had the rest of the day at leisure. The capital city offered plenty of ways to ease into the trip, from wandering through Lal Bazaar to visiting Rumtek Monastery.
Gangtok’s combination of mountain views, colourful markets and Buddhist monasteries gave the couple their first taste of Sikkim before the itinerary took them higher into the mountains.
Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir
The following morning brought a journey towards East Sikkim and Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake.
Located high in the mountains, Tsomgo Lake changes character with the seasons. Its blue waters sit surrounded by steep mountain slopes, creating one of Sikkim’s most recognisable landscapes. The drive towards the lake itself added to the experience, with the road climbing through increasingly dramatic Himalayan scenery.
The route continued to Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple, popularly known as Baba Mandir. The memorial is associated with Indian Army soldier Harbhajan Singh and has become a well-known stop for travellers visiting this part of Sikkim. Nathula Pass took the journey towards one of the most important mountain passes along the India-China border.
By evening, Prachi and Darshak were back in Gangtok, ready for the next change of scenery.
The Road to Lachung
Day three marked the beginning of their journey into North Sikkim.
The road from Gangtok to Lachung came with its own collection of stops. At Singhik Viewpoint, the duo could look towards the mighty Kanchenjunga, with the Himalayan peak dominating the distant landscape when visibility allowed.
The road then continued through Seven Sisters Waterfalls and Naga Falls, where water rushed down the mountainsides alongside the route. Further ahead, Bhim Nala Falls, also known as Amitabh Bachchan Falls, added another dramatic stop before the journey reached Lachung.
The landscape became increasingly rugged as the road followed the Lachung Chu River through the mountains. After the day's drive and sightseeing, the couple checked into their hotel in Lachung, surrounded by the high-altitude landscape of North Sikkim.
A Day in the Valley of Flowers
The next morning was reserved for one of the most anticipated destinations of the trip: Yumthang Valley.
Often called the Valley of Flowers, Yumthang sits surrounded by towering Himalayan mountains, alpine meadows and the Lachung Chu River. During the flowering season, the valley comes alive with colourful blooms, creating a striking contrast against the rugged mountains surrounding it.
The journey also brought Prachi and Darshak into the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, home to several species of rhododendrons and a wide variety of Himalayan flora. The landscape here changes with altitude, moving between forests, open meadows and mountain streams.
Zero Point and Mount Katao were also available as optional extensions, taking the journey towards even higher and more remote stretches of the region. After exploring Yumthang, the couple returned to Lachung for another night among the mountains.
Back to Gangtok
After their North Sikkim adventure, Prachi and Darshak travelled back towards Gangtok.
The return journey offered a chance to see many of the landscapes from a different perspective. The mountain roads, rivers and forested valleys that had accompanied their journey into Lachung gradually gave way to the familiar sights of Gangtok.
With their final evening in the city left at leisure, the couple had time to slow down after several days of sightseeing. The trip had moved from Gangtok's urban mountain setting into the quieter landscapes of Lachung and Yumthang before bringing them back to the capital.
