Most people hear about Kudremukh the same way. A friend returns from a trek with suspiciously good photographs, somebody in the office mentions it during a Monday morning conversation, or a social media reel appears showing endless green hills rolling into the horizon. Before long, the trek finds its way onto the travel bucket list.
For Manjunatha Basappa, the curiosity eventually turned into a three-day journey into the heart of Karnataka's Western Ghats. What followed was a weekend of mist-covered trails, forest walks, mountain views, and the kind of conversations that only seem to happen when a group of strangers do trek together.
A Gentle Introduction to the Western Ghats
The journey began with an overnight departure from Bangalore, where a group of trekkers set off towards Kudremukh. By early morning, the city lights had disappeared, replaced by winding roads, forested hills, and fresh mountain air.
Unlike many trekking itineraries that jump straight into the main activity, the first day in Kudremukh unfolded at a slower pace. After checking into the homestay and enjoying breakfast, the group headed towards Bavikonda Viewpoint. The short walk served as an introduction to the landscape they would be exploring over the next two days.
Open valleys stretched into the distance while layers of green hills rolled across the horizon. It was the kind of view that encouraged people to slow down, take a deep breath, and leave behind whatever they had been worrying about back in the city.
Later, a visit to Somavathi Waterfalls offered another reason to appreciate the region. Surrounded by greenery and the soothing sounds of flowing water, the waterfall became a popular place to relax before the main trek. By evening, conversations flowed easily around the homestay as trekkers shared stories, compared travel experiences, and prepared for the following day's challenge.
The Trail Was the Real Highlight

The trek to Kudremukh Peak began early the next morning.
Backpacks were packed, water bottles checked, and hiking shoes tightened one final time before the group set off. The route ahead stretched nearly 20 kilometres round-trip, taking trekkers through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Western Ghats.
What makes Kudremukh special is how frequently the scenery changes. One moment, the trail passes through dense forests where sunlight filters through the trees in scattered patches. A little later, the landscape opens into vast grasslands where rolling green hills extend in every direction.
For Manjunatha, this variety became one of the most enjoyable parts of the trek. The landscape never seemed to stay the same for very long.
Somewhere Along the Way, Strangers Became Teammates

One of the unexpected highlights of the trek had little to do with mountains.
Most people began the journey as strangers. By the time they were navigating streams, taking breaks together, and sharing stories along the trail, that had started to change.
Trekking has a way of creating conversations naturally. Someone offers to take a photograph. Someone else shares a snack. A few encouraging words help during a steeper climb. Small interactions gradually turn strangers into companions.
The camaraderie became especially noticeable during the longer stretches of the trail and eventually became one of the memories that stayed with him long after the trek was over.
Why Manjunatha chose Thrillophilia for his Kudremukh Trek
Eventually, the trail led to the summit of Kudremukh.
The reward was immediate.
From the top, endless stretches of green valleys unfolded below, framed by mist-covered ridges and rolling peaks. The views seemed to extend forever. Some trekkers immediately reached for their cameras, while others simply stood quietly, taking in the scenery.
For Manjunatha, it was the kind of moment that made every kilometre of the trek worthwhile.
Here’s what he shared with us:

The trail is well-marked and safe, allowing both beginners and seasoned trekkers to enjoy the journey with confidence. Finally, many thanks to Jeevan for your guidance and support in making this trip memorable."
As the group began its descent and the journey back towards Bangalore, there was a shared feeling among many trekkers. Kudremukh had delivered everything they had hoped for: challenging trails, unforgettable views, meaningful conversations, and a few memories that would likely stay with them long after the trek was over.
